The Do’s and Do Not’s for Dry Shampoo

So many women are intrigued by dry shampoo, especially because it’s a huge time saver. I always think it’s funny when someone goes from washing their hair everyday to discovering the right dry shampoo and then bragging about how many days it’s been since they’ve washed! It’s almost as if they think they should get an award, ha! I’ve been that person too, and that’s because it’s just so darn liberating to break the cycle and chore of washing and drying your hair every single day.

Why I Love Dry Shampoo

Having fine hair myself that tends to get very oily between washes, I personally love using dry shampoo and here’s why:

  1. Extends my blow dry for one or two days
  2. Efficient not to wash and dry my hair each day
  3. Perfect for a post-workout spruce-up
  4. Helps maintain up-do styles and braids

How Does it Work?

Dry shampoo works by absorbing oil and grease and doubles as a styling aid for texture, volume, lift, grip and hold. Most dry shampoo formulas contain ingredients like cornstarch, rice starch, potato starch and kaolin to soak in grease. Some formulas also contain natural oils, like tea tree, to kill bacteria that causes your scalp to itch and/or smell. There are countless dry shampoo brands on the market offering different ingredients that do certain things for all of the existing hair types. For instance, curly hair types typically don’t use a ton of dry shampoo because natural oils from the scalp are often beneficial in keeping their curls soft and hydrated. My suggestion to you is to try a bunch of different formulas until you find one that you love. One of my favorites is the Batiste Dry Shampoo that comes in many options for different hair colors.

What Dry Shampoo Doesn’t Do

Dry shampoo does not actually cleanse your scalp or take the place of cleaning your hair. Also, if you go too many days without cleansing and just using products, it can actually create build-up and lead to a dry, itchy scalp – so don’t extend your wash too long!

Style Tip: No style looks as good as when your hair is freshly washed and blow dried. Try to schedule the days you plan to wash your hair for when you have an event or need your hair to look its absolute best!
